NEED FOR A MIRACLE (1997)
In the second half of the 90’s, Italy went through an extraordinary, disturbing phenomenon. From north to south, with no geographical or cultural distinctions, there was a proliferation of bleeding statues of the Madonna and Christ, visionaries, faith healers, exorcists. Group masses, held by improbable figures, self-proclaimed priests, gifted with extraordinary charismatic powers, welcome hundreds, if not thousands of faithful, attracted by the words of the visionary of the moment. These photographs are a journey into the world of mystics and religious sects. It was a difficult process, above all in overcoming the mistrust of some of these “gurus” who have often got rich easily exploiting the substantial contributions of many particularly ingenuous devotees.
The reportage won 2nd prize in the Daily Life Stories category at Word Press Photo 1997
